Association governance & advocacy
Pennsylvania Chiropractic Association
The challenge
A statewide association arrived at December 2023 with more than a decade of financial decline behind it, governance that hadn't been rebuilt in years, and a legislative and regulatory position that depends on members, legislators, and the public understanding something complicated. Most associations lose that fight on clarity alone, long before they lose it on the merits.
The approach
As Executive Director & Senior Vice President, Mike's work spans strategy, finance, governance, legislative advocacy, member communication, technology, and staff and board leadership. He reversed the financial decline through cost discipline, vendor strategy, and revenue development, and partnered with the Board to rewrite the bylaws and redesign the Board and committee structure. He built a five-year roadmap linking finance, education, advocacy, and technology; built executive dashboards tying revenue, expenses, reserves, programs, and events together, plus a legislative dashboard tracking engagement and progress across advocacy campaigns — including active work on insurance-industry recognition (an insurance help desk supporting members directly) and a legislative district tool and county-level intelligence map supporting the advocacy campaigns. He introduced CRM automation, segmented communications, and AI-enabled workflows, and created and executive-produced the Spinal Chat podcast to make policy and clinical evidence legible to members and patients.
The result
Positive operating performance restored within 18 months. Corporate partnership revenue up more than 40%. Administrative workload down roughly 30% while engagement is up 18%. Bipartisan legislation he helped build support for passed the Pennsylvania House 193–8.
